Waiting on God

Have you ever found yourself waiting for something only God can do? The kind of waiting where you’ve prayed the same prayer(s) over and over.

Where you wonder:

Will today be the day?

Waiting has a way of testing our faith. We want to see progress.

We LONG for answers, we look for signs that something is happening….but often times God is asking us to trust in Him before He allows us to see what He’s been doing all along.

To be honest I’ve been in that season for awhile.

A Gift That Planted More Than Flowers

When I moved back to Florida from Texas last May I brought something special with me— my iris’s. They had been a beautiful and thoughtful gift from a dear friend of mine, and bringing them with me felt like bringing a piece of our friendship along too.

That September, it was finally time to take them out of their pots and plant them in the ground. I couldn’t wait to watch them settle in, grow strong roots, and eventually, reward the waiting with their beautiful blooms.

As the weeks passed I’d find myself looking at the flower bed, hoping today would be the day I’d see something.

A flower stalk.

A bud.

Anything.

Some days there was nothing to see. Other days there was just a little more growth than the day before.

A Glimpse of Hope Before Winter

Finally, the day before Thanksgiving, I spotted my very first bud. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, another one bloomed. I was so excited!! After weeks of waiting, it felt like the beginning of something beautiful.

But then….nothing.

The blooms faded, winter arrived, and no new buds appeared.

I continued to care for them, trusting that even though I couldn’t see much happening above the ground something was still taking place beneath the surface.

Sometimes the Waiting Continues

After those first two blooms, winter settled in.

At first, I found myself wondering if there would be any more flowers. But I also knew something about irises: they need a cold winter before they burst into bloom in the spring. Florida winters are more mild than northern Texas winters and that was something that concerned me. I was hoping the area I am in would have a long cold enough freeze to give the irises exactly what they needed.

Spring Finally Came

In March I noticed the first buds beginning to appear. Then one iris bloomed. Soon another followed. And now, as I walk outside, I get to enjoy the beauty I had been waiting months to see.

Beneath the Surface

As I stood there admiring them, I realized something…

These irises have been teaching me about faith.

While I was watching what was happening above the ground, so much more was happening where I couldn’t see it. Their roots were growing stronger. The plant was preparing for the blooms that would eventually come.

Looking back, I can’t help but see how much that reminds me of my walk with God. There are seasons when it feels like nothing is happening. Prayers seem unanswered, and all I can do is keep trusting in Him.

There are prayers and hopes I’ve been faithfully bringing before Him that still haven’t been answered .

If I’m being honest, waiting is hard.

It’s tempting to wonder if God hears me.

It’s tempting to believe that because I can’t see anything happening, nothing is happening at all.

But these irises reminded me that simply is not true.

Maybe in the waiting He’s preparing something in me beneath the surface.

Strengthening my faith.

Teaching me to trust Him.

Shaping my heart before He reveals what’s next.

Isaiah 60:22 says,

“When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen.”

Not when I think it’s time.

Not when I’ve grown impatient.

When His time is right.

The Greater Miracle

Over the past two years, pursuing a genuine relationship with Jesus has changed me more than I ever expected. I spent much of my life knowing about God, but it wasn’t until I began developing a personal relationship with Him that He showed me my worth—not because of anything I’ve accomplished, but because I belong to Him. He’s shown me how deeply He loves me and what true love really looks like.

I’m far from perfect.

But I’m becoming who He created me to be.

And maybe that’s the greater miracle happening while I wait.

Because…maybe…waiting isn’t just about hoping God will change our circumstances.

Maybe it’s also about allowing Him to change us.

I still don’t know when—or how—He will answer the prayers I’ve been faithfully bringing before Him. But because of what He’s already done in my heart, I know I can trust Him with what I cannot yet see.

If You’re Waiting Too…

If you’re in a season where you’re praying for something that hasn’t happened yet, I want to encourage you with this:

I know how hard waiting can be.

I know what it feels like to wonder when your own “spring” will come.

But don’t mistake silence for absence. Just because you can’t see God working doesn’t mean He isn’t.

Just like an iris spends months growing beneath the soil before anyone sees its beauty, God is often doing His greatest work within us—in the places only He can see.

So if you are still waiting….

Keep praying.

Keep trusting.

Keep believing.

Don’t lose heart.

God is preparing something in you, even when life feels quiet. Even when nothing seems to be changing. Even when the waiting feels longer than you expected.

He is faithful.

The waiting isn’t wasted.

God is still working beneath the surface, strengthening your roots, growing your faith, and preparing you for what’s ahead.

And when the time is right, He will make it happen.💛🤍
