Family Photo Outfits Made Easy

The date is set, your session is officially booked……but then the thought of panic sets in with the question:

“BUT WHAT WILL WE WEAR?!”

I promise this is absolutely normal!!!

Every family asks me this question and with a few simple guidelines, choosing outfits will feel easy and fun!!

It will also help your photos look timeless and beautiful!!!

THINK SOFT AND SIMPLE

Neutral tones (creams, tans, grays, soft blues, blushes) photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces. Pastels and muted tones work especially well with natural light and outdoor settings.

MOM SETS THE TONE

I recommend the mother to choose her outfit first. Find a soft colored flowy dress that you feel confident in that moves beautifully THEN build everyone’s outfit around your palette.

COORDINATE….DON’T MATCH

Instead of everyone in the exact same color, choose 3–4 colors that blend well (think soft blues/lavenders, creams, light sage, and blush accents). Then, mix them across your family in different ways. This creates a put-together look without feeling stiff or uniform.

ADD TEXTURE, NOT LOUD PATTERNS

Subtle textures (like linen, knits, or delicate florals) add interest without distraction. Avoid neon colors, bold stripes, or large plaids — they can take attention away from your family’s connection.

KEEP SHOES NEUTRAL

Simple shoes in browns, tans, or soft colors are best. Bare feet for little ones are not only sweet but also photograph beautifully. Skip bright sneakers or character shoes if possible.

LET YOUR PERSONALITIES PEEK THROUGH (within the palette)

I want your children to feel like themselves, not like they’re in a costume. If your daughter loves sparkly shoes or your son insists on a bowtie, find a version that still fits your soft color scheme. That way their personality shines and your photos stay cohesive

FINAL WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Your family doesn’t need to look like a catalog to look beautiful. With soft colors, simple textures, and outfits that feel like you, your photos will be both natural and timeless — the kind you’ll treasure for decades.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own. When you book your session with me, you’ll also receive my detailed Style Guide with even more outfit inspiration. My goal? For you to feel confident, relaxed, and excited walking into your photos— because your focus should be on making memories, not stressing over clothes.
